The Golden City — sand dunes, desert camps, a magnificent fort city rising from the Thar. 560 km from Jaipur, an unforgettable Rajasthan experience.
Jaisalmer is unlike any other city in India. Rising from the flat expanse of the Thar Desert like a golden mirage, this medieval fort city was once the most important trading post on the ancient Silk Route between India and Central Asia. Today, Jaisalmer's extraordinary honey-gold sandstone architecture, its dramatic desert landscape, and its extraordinary living culture make it one of India's most unique and unmissable destinations.
Located 560 km from Jaipur — the farthest major destination in our tour network — Jaisalmer demands at least 3 to 4 days to experience properly. The drive itself through the Thar Desert is one of Rajasthan's great road trips, with the landscape gradually transforming from scrubby Marwar plains to the rippling golden sand dunes of the great desert.
The golden sandstone Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fully intact forts in the world and one of the very few "living forts" in India — meaning that approximately 3,000 people still live, work, and worship inside its walls. Founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, the fort rises 76 meters above the desert floor, its massive yellow sandstone walls blending seamlessly with the sandy landscape below.
Inside the fort, a labyrinth of narrow lanes leads past ancient Jain temples, ornate havelis, small guesthouses, restaurants, and craft shops. The four Jain temples inside the fort (12th–15th century) are masterpieces of sandstone carving with extraordinarily detailed ceilings, doorways, and pillars. The Royal Palace (Raj Mahal) houses a small but excellent museum of royal artifacts, old maps, and historical photographs.
Sam Sand Dunes (42 km from Jaisalmer): The most famous and visited dune system near Jaisalmer, Sam offers the classic "Rajasthan desert" experience — towering orange dunes, camel safaris at sunset, and luxury desert camps with folk music and dance performances under a star-filled sky. The sunrise here, when the first light catches the rippled sand and turns it from silver to gold, is among the most beautiful natural spectacles in India.
Khuri Dunes (45 km from Jaisalmer): A quieter, more authentic alternative to Sam. The village of Khuri has a wonderful community-run tourism initiative with families hosting guests in mud huts decorated with traditional Rajasthani paintings. Less commercial and more immersive than Sam, Khuri is recommended for travelers who want a genuine desert village experience.
Camel Safari: No Jaisalmer visit is complete without a camel safari at sunset. Rides range from 30 minutes (sufficient for photographs) to multi-day overnight safaris sleeping under the stars in bedrolls. Our tour packages include a 1-hour camel ride at sunset as standard, with longer safaris available on request.
The grandest of Jaisalmer's many historic merchant mansions, Patwon Ki Haveli is actually a cluster of five havelis built between 1800 and 1860 by the wealthy Patwa merchant brothers. The facades are covered in extraordinarily intricate sandstone carvings — lace-like latticed screens, pillared balconies, and miniature arches — representing the peak of Jaisalmer's stonemason tradition. One haveli is now a museum; others have been converted into craft shops and guesthouses.
This beautiful artificial reservoir just outside the city walls was built in 1367 by Maharawal Gadsi Singh as Jaisalmer's primary water supply. Today it's a peaceful spot for morning walks, boat rides, and birdwatching. The ornate yellow sandstone chhatris, temples, and shrines surrounding the lake create a picturesque composition that's especially beautiful at dawn and dusk.
